Commentary on law, politics, and justice.
In the rush of Democrats to eulogize Senator Byrd, whose service was long and extraordinary, let us not forget that he supported the odious Defense of Marriage Act, invoking Genesis and other Biblical passage on the Senate floor and claiming that "Out of [same-sex] relationships emotional bonding oftentimes does not take place...."
Wasn't he a card carrying member of the KKK?
He waas a member of the KKK; he gave what appears to be a fake apology upon withdrawing from the group - because he continued to praise it secretly; he loathed same-sex marriage; he filibustered the '64 Act, etc.
Wow! Some interesting things about him that I had never heard. I honestly hadn't a clue who he was prior to him being wheeled in to vote on health care reform. [hanging my head in shame]I must admit that I am really a budding psychologist that only cared about the law as far as it interacted with Social Psychology prior to June 2009 or so.As for DOMA and the Bible, the Hebrew and Greek versions of that verse in Leviticus that people love to throw around does not use the word "abomination." That verse appears in a section discussing how the Israelites were to separate themselves while they were living among a people very different from themselves and were to worship God in a different way. One of the ways the Canaanites worshiped their gods was by same-sex intercourse in their temples. This was not a condemnation of LGBTs and I'm tired of my fellow Christians using it as an excuse to hate and discriminate against a group of people.Jesus spent his recorded life teaching tolerance, inclusion and opposing the Pharisees using scripture to discriminate and mistreat certain groups. I find it very sad that, today, people do that very same thing in his name.
