Ole Miss Drops "Dixie," Ku Klux Klan Protests

The University of Mississippi has dropped a school fight song that included "Dixie" -- the unofficial theme song of the Confederacy. The university chancellor requested that the university band discontinue playing the song because many fans chanted "the South will rise again" after the song concluded.

The decision to abandon the song has angered the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, which staged a protest before Saturday's football contest between LSU and Mississippi. Even though the school band will no longer play Dixie, the team is still named the "Rebels."

One thing I have never really understood is how a lot of the most die-hard "south will rise again" people are also nationalistic, "America right or wrong," red staters who think flag-burning should be punishable by death, anyone north of the Mason-Dixon line or west of Nevada is an America-hating communist atheist traitor. These two viewpoints seem mutually inconsistent to me.

I was reminded of the same paradox that liberal dissent mentions, when I stopped to take some photos of an old county courthouse in North Carolina (where I live). In front of the courthouse there is a memorial to local Confederate soldiers -- erected in 1990. There is also a crumbling and neglected memorial to WWI soldiers. And no memorial at all for those who served in other wars. It seemed a very curious display of priorities, to single out for "honor" only those who fought against the United States.

As I recall when Richmond fell Lincoln had the band lay Dixie. He said it was a first class tune and now properly the property of the US government.

Maybe because I live up North but I've never understood the fuss over the song, no matter how many times ole miss band plays Dixie it doesn't change one simple fact:

We won, they lost. Or to paraphrase Sherman

...All the powers of earth cannot restore to them the Jim Crow south any more then their dead grandfathers...

The sooner everybody figures this out the better everybody will be.
